There’s nothing like hanging out with the guy you’re head over heels for, but you might be spending too much time together (yes, it’s possible). But how do you know when you’re overdoing it and could do with taking a step back? Here are some signs you need to spend some time with anyone but each other.
- You’ve started becoming the same person. When you spend a lot of time together, it’s inevitable that some of the other person’s quirks and qualities are going to rub off on you, whether it be phrases they use or little habits they have. Finishing each other’s sentences is only cute up until a certain point. If you share the same hobbies, can’t remember the last time you got invited to something as separate people or have no idea what to do when the other isn’t around, that’s something you need to address.
- You don’t go out anymore. Because what’s the point in going somewhere if it’s just each other you’re going to be seeing anyway, amirite? Wrong. Date nights are so important for keeping the love alive. They also help you remember what attracted you to this guy in the first place. Variety is the spice of life, and if you can’t remember the last time you saw him wearing anything besides stained pajama pants and a dirty t-shirt, you guys need to arrange a dinner date, stat!
- Your sex life is all but dead. Sex isn’t the be-all and end-all in a relationship, but let’s face it, it’s pretty damn important, and sometimes being a little too intimate with your time can wreak havoc on intimacy in the bedroom.
- You take each other for granted. Chances are, you’ve gotten used to (and have even come to expect) little things he does because he’s nice, not because he has to. Taking your significant other for granted can also be a breeding ground for irritation. If lately you’ve come to realize that you can’t stand the way he so much as breathes or chews, it may be time to start assessing things.
- You can’t imagine not being in constant communication. Not only are you consistently in each other’s company in real life, but you’re also conversing with each other constantly over text, phone calls, Facebook posts, WhatsApp, and whatever else you can even think of. Don’t get me wrong — communication is healthy. However, when you start getting jealous when he hasn’t texted to tell you what sandwich filling he went for today or enraged because you don’t know what he is doing right now at this very second… well, y’all got some issues.
- You’ve forgotten what alone time feels like. No, the last time you went to the bathroom doesn’t count, nor do all those hours you spend at work or college. Quality time with yourself is so important and neglecting it can for sure have a negative impact on your relationship and on you.
- You’ve become distant from others in your life. Has your bestie been giving you the side-eye lately? When was the last time you called your mom? When you meet someone you’re nuts about, it can be so easy to devote all your time and energy to them. But when it comes to spending too much time with your guy, it’s not just your romantic relationship that is impacted negatively. Friends and family also need to be nurtured. Who do you think is going to be there to pick up the pieces if things ever go south?
- You’ve lost sight of your own identity. This one’s the biggy. Do you remember what your own hopes and dreams entailed of before you met him? What were your goals before you got together? Have you been neglecting things that were once so important to you, such as your studies, hobbies, or career? Maybe it’s time to start rediscovering yourself before he becomes what defines you.
